How to Have a Positive Experience With Social Media

This site is made possible by visitors who click ads, purchase food guides, cookbooks, and handmade jewelry. Thank you for your kindness!

While it can be fun to connect with people from all over the world…poor impulse control and lack of repercussions have allowed some members of society to make social media a negative experience.

If you spend a lot of your time scrolling without protecting yourself, you’re going to come out feeling bad. But you can take steps to ensure that your time online is productive and positive.

What can you do when every time you open Facebook, all you see is people arguing over their opinions? Shut it down and walk away…that’s right, disengage and you will be a happier person.

Stop reading the comments, and find something that makes you feel better about the world. Make it a point to follow pages that promote kindness and positivity, and unlike any pages that don’t. And what about your friends? Go through your list and see what people are posting about.

Are they mindlessly sharing clickbait headlines, or failing to fact-check? Are they sharing outdated articles, obsessed with politics or horrible stories? If so, then they have to go! You can either choose to unfollow them completely, snooze them in a time out, or unfriend them altogether.

If certain people weren’t adding value to your life, would you invite them over for dinner? Nope. Then why are they occupying space on your friend list? Cultivate a productive list of people whose posts bring a smile to your face and make you feel good.

There are plenty of journalists in the world, so if you’re looking for the news, you can go find it without having to see it on your newsfeed. What about the self-loathing you feel when you’re bombarded with people who look perfect? For one, no one really looks like that.

Everyone has pores. Skin would fail to function without those minuscule openings. Everyone is born with lines. Take a look at any baby, or child. There are lines and spots all over everyone’s skin: IT’S NORMAL! Sure, the cracks and crevices become more pronounced as we age, but there isn’t a person on the planet with flawless skin all day, every day.

For those who are blessed with a spotless complexion some of the time, that’s when they take selfies to share with the world. And you didn’t get to see them last week when they had an acne breakout. The point is, don’t compare yourself to a flat, 2D photo taken at the right angle, in the most flattering light.

Let’s not forget about filters, and photoshop, and who knows what else…back in the day people were forced to see beauty standards staring back at them from magazines in the checkout aisle, now it’s everywhere and seems inescapable. But real life doesn’t happen on social media, so take some time to look at real people and you’ll see that hardly anyone is the model they appear to be online.

Then when you go back and scroll through Instagram, remember that it’s all smoke and mirrors. Also, if looking at gorgeous people makes you feel bad, unfollow them. Instead, start following accounts that showcase cute animals, art, poetry, and anything else that will give you a boost in happiness.

Stop posting complaints and symptoms, and unfollow those who do. Look, everyone gets a headache from time to time, and some of us even get nasty migraines. But what is the point of posting about it? All it does is make people think you’re a whiner, and it actually can make the pain worse.

Not only are you putting out the vibes that attract more of the same, you are reinforcing neural connections between pain receptors and your brain, which can create more head pain in the future. Ain’t nobody got time for that. And social media was never meant to be a giant diary.

There are some things that should remain personal. Instead of running to post your complaints which will just be ignored by most people, choose to add value and post something positive that you’ve encountered recently. You will not only change your own experience for the better, but enrich the lives of those around you.
