The holidays are a time of year where we celebrate with treats and comfort food. But having food allergies and a low histamine diet can prove frustrating for even the most festive person.

It is very difficult to find low histamine Halloween candy or low histamine desserts on the shelves, and even harder to find low histamine Halloween recipes. So, I have gathered together a few of my favorite low histamine treats that can be dressed up for Halloween or enjoyed during any holiday:

Low Histamine Caramel Apples

To ensure that it is a low histamine apple you are using, do not prepare any fruit that is overripe. For more information about what you can and cannot eat on a low histamine diet, please refer to my comprehensive low histamine e-guide.

You can choose any apple, but Honeycrisp and Fuji are my favorites due to their sweetness.

Low histamine caramel sauce is easy to make! All you need is 1 medium sized vanilla bean pod; this is the only way to ensure low histamine vanilla as vanilla extracts are fermented. Scoop out the contents.

You also need 3/4 cup of pure cane sugar.

5 Tablespoons of low histamine butter; the way to figure that out is to read the label and ensure there aren’t any ingredients that are not allowed. The closest to natural without additives is the best.

1/2 cup of heavy cream. As I said above, read the label and watch for additives or fermented cultures.

1/3 cup of water (keep more on the side if needed)

1 pinch of salt.

In a saucepan on medium heat, mix in sugar and water (add more water if needed) and cook until bubbling. Cook until cloudy liquid turns clear.

Avoid stirring and cook for 10 minutes until the caramel turns light brown. Keep an eye on it so it doesn’t burn.

Remove from heat and stir in cream slowly, keep stirring until mixed well.

Add in vanilla and salt, mix well.

Let cool for 20 minutes.

Wash apples and dip in whole, or slice and dip in slices.

Sprinkle on chopped low histamine nuts.

Low Histamine Caramel Popcorn

You can use the same low histamine caramel recipe from above and drizzle it on naturally low histamine popcorn.

If you have an air popper you can skip the oil and go right to the other ingredients.

1/3 cup of popcorn kernels.

1/3 cup of low histamine cooking oil. Sunflower oil is okay, but my e-guide has the full list.

1/2 teaspoon of baking soda

Pop your popcorn in the oil in a large saucepan on medium heat. Shake well until finished popping.

Remove saucepan from heat and place popcorn in a heat safe bowl.

Pour caramel sauce and baking soda onto popcorn and stir well.

Spread popcorn onto a large baking tray and bake at 110°C/230°F for 40 minutes. Be sure to flip the popcorn every 10 minutes. Keep an eye on it so it doesn’t burn.

Coffee is low histamine as long as it is decaffeinated and mold free. You can do an online search for brands that guarantee the beans they use are free from any molds that may cause a spike in histamine.

Nettle leaf is naturally low histamine and makes a great low histamine tea. In fact, it is a natural antihistamine and blocks histamine production. The flavor is earthy but can be steeped with sugar, pure maple syrup, or mangoes for a sweet treat.

Once your low histamine coffee or tea is ready, you can take a small spoon and a toothpick to design a cream ghost on the top. Be sure your cream does not contain any fermented ingredients. Pure cream is better.

Just drop a small dollop of cream onto your coffee or tea, and use a toothpick to move it into a shape of a ghost. You can even get more creative and try a spiderweb or even a Jack O’Lantern.
